Itinerary highlights
Our La Rioja wine & walking tour is a true trip for wine-lovers, nature-lovers & walking enthusiasts! There is not only wine tasting on the Schedule during this week-long program. There will be opportunities to see how wine was made yesterday in comparison with modern techniques of authors or garage styled modern wines. Experience & walk the colourful landscapes of the autumn with all its aromas and flavours. We stay at a modern and cosy family hotel in the beautiful village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida & Haro right on the golden mile of la Rioja Alta.

 

Day 1

Arrival to Bilbao, transfer on your own to downtown hotel, check in free afternoon and evening. Check out the Guggenheim & pintxos hop the Old town maybe?

Day 2

In the morning train to Miranda de Ebro and private taxi to village of Montoria and picnic to bring along on walk.

On todays first walk you will get a marvelous first view of the Rioja valley and stroll along in a typical northern slope beech forest. Enjoy your picnic watching the whole valley and later stroll down and get a glimpse of the first vineyards of the golden wine mile of La Rioja Alta.

Day 3

Linear walk and return to Briones and visit to one of the finest wine museums in the world the Wine museum Dinastía Vivanco afterwards lunch on your own in village or at the museum. After lunch a visit to a unique winemaker and winery.

Day 4

Vineyard walk and art walk to Labastida. Close to Remelluri you have the chance to visit one of the biggest Necropolis there are in La Rioja. Visit one of the first terroire and ecological wineries in the region – Remelluri and afterwards, you will get the chance to spot art in nature on the final part of the itinerary.

Day 5

On todays walk we will climb 400m to the Toloño monastery ruins and see where the monks that started the winemaking around the vineyards in Remelluri lived and made ice in huge natural fridges.

 

Day 6

Final destination Haro – the wine city of La Rioja alta where the modern history of La Rioja begins.

 

Dinner at the hotel

Day 7

Enjoy a visit to the station área and the old winery área of Haro – visit to Muga one of the more traditional winerys in La Rioja. Lunch on your own and later bus to Bilbao.

Day 8

Optional Guggenheim visit or bike tour in Bilbao along La Ría del Nervión

Check out and transfer to airport and afternoon flight home.

Bilbao is the best airport for regular incoming international flights. Easyjet also operates to Bilbao & Ryanair operates to Santander  airport from several European cities. From UK there are weekly ferries to Bilbao and Santander. Ask us for the best option!

As we have prepared written detailed itineraries and maps, you will be able to complete each route at your own pace. And if you still need an extra challenge we can provide you with some alternative extra kilometers to complete the physical activity of each day. Some routes are marked with yellow/white and red/white itinerary marks.
Recommended walking accesories : Walking poles, gore tex walking shoes/ low ancle boots, light ruck-sack for daily necessities. Lightweight and breathable jacket. 1 Warmer sweater, gloves and cap depending of time of the year for the higher altitude walks day 2 & 3. Light, comfortable and ‘breathable’ layers to either put on or take off depending on changing weather conditions.
